Take Your Own Action Shots

I get asked all the time on Instagram, “Steff, how do you take those action shots?”

I realized a few months ago, I have very little action shots of myself running. I needed to change this. I have seen so many people post awesome pictures while working out. I figured, I have a communications degree I should be able to figure this out!

And instantly, this pops in my head…

ANYWAY!

So, since everyone has been asking, here are the steps I take to get my own action shots! I will use examples from my Tuesday night workout, but the steps work outside as well.

-  FINISH YOUR WORKOUT!!! I take my pictures when I’m done. Please do not break your rhythm to try and get a great shot!

- Prop your phone against a sturdy object. In my basement, where my treadmill is, there is a table behind my treadmill up against a wall. It is at a perfect angle for this! When I am outside, I either use my car bumper or my water bottle.

Load the camera on your phone and set it to video. Then, for a few second, either pose or run past your phone.

- Go back through the video and find the best frame.

- When you find the shot you like, take a screen shot. Remember, if you are uploading the photo to Instagram, you do not want the photo to take up the whole screen, it will not fit.

I upload my photos through FitSnap. I do this for a few reasons. First is it re sizes the photos perfectly for Instagram. Second, I can easily track my workouts for the blog.

It really is that easy!! Please feel free to use these tips and tag me in your photos! I want to see how it works for you guys!

How do you take your own photos? Do you prefer action shots or the selfie?

  1. I've used the Video and Screenshot method for a couple of my Yoga pictures, however, I've never done it in public. I HATE people staring at me, much more so when they watch me putting my phone down, posing and then going to pick it back up! ;)

Maybe I just need to stop being a baby, hah!

  3. I also like to use Shake Camera app because it has a self timer and burst 15 pictures.

  8. Video? Brilliant! I'm convinced my arms are too short for a decent selfie so I prefer the actions shot. Thanks for the great tip!
