2014 Liberty Mile Recap

I have said this tons of times, the Liberty Mile is my FAVORITE race! It is a one mile road race down Liberty Avenue on a Friday night and it is a blast! Since I'm not the fastest person, I always run the One For Fun heat so I can watch all the other heats and have a great time.

This is the third year of the event, and I have done all three. The first year I ran a 6:30 and last year was a 6:42. The goal for this year was for the clock to start with a 6.

So hubby and I along with Gloria, Natalie and Jeff met at Chelsea's apartment downtown and chatted while walking to packet pickup.

Natalie and I were overly excited to be wearing our Oiselle Flock kit for the first time! We were aiming for the same goals as well!

We also met up with Carrie, who I didn't get a picture with, who was also aiming for a sub-7. The three of us started together.

While in the starting corral, I finally met Shawn and saw Jennifer again! So many run friends, I was already having a blast! Apparently my good time was making others nervous. Natalie and Carrie both wanted to puke. Chelsea thought she was going to die. I'm there singing and dancing. Yep. Sounds about right.

So we lined up about three rows back. Ready, set go!

I found a gap in the first few feet and I took it. I knew Carrie was right by me, which was perfect. I decided to not run with music, and I instantly regretted that decision. I knew I was going too fast. The children didn't run in the heat this year and it was 100x's better! First quarter mile: 1:15.

CRAP!! WAY TOO FAST! I wanted to be about 1:25-1:30 for the first quarter.

I slowed down a little and still saw Carrie. I only see a few women in front of me, but having to listen to my breathing is driving me crazy. I just want to be done. We came up to the turn and I saw my half mile split. 3:00 flat. Still too fast.

At this point, I start seeing more women come up. I knew I messed up. Carrie pushed forward and I screamed for her to go. Not sure if she heard me, but I was so proud of her. I still haven't seen Natalie and I'm starting to get worried. I hit the three quarter mile mark, after what seemed like FOREVER! 4:34.

MUCH BETTER!

Thanks Kelsey for the great photo!!!

I am dying at this point. I see more people passing me, including a little kid who looked fantastic. I don't even care. I know I will have a 6 in front of my time and I slowed up. With under 100 meters to go I FINALLY saw Natalie! I was so excited for her!

She crossed the finish line just before I did. I stopped my watch and it said 6:31. Little did I know, I must have started my watch late. It was actually 6:33. Oh well it was still great! It was good for 71st overall and 5th in my age group! I was so excited! I am not in speed shape right now, so this was a great confidence booster!

Carrie was 61st and Natalie was 64rd!

Everyone did great!

While we were recovering, Natalie and I spotted Lauren Penney who is a Oiselle runner!! She was competing in the Elite wave. We had a total fan girl moment and went over to chat. She was so nice!

We went back along the race course to watch Kim and Kelsey race in the team wave! They both did great!!

Then coach Jeff ran in the Masters division.

We were so ready to cheer Lauren on in the Unstoppable division! She is another Flock member and an AMAZING runner! I almost missed her come by!

So it was finally time for the Pro wave. Women were first then the men. We waited to see legs coming down the avenue. When we finally saw Lauren coming down, we screamed! She looked strong! She ended up finishing fifth in a close finish!

In the Men's wave, we all were cheering for Jordan McNamara. He has come so close to winning the past two years. This year, he did pull out the win and an awesome victory celebration!!

After the race we went back to Chelsea's apartment and had pizza and cupcakes. It was a great evening! I can't wait to do it again next year!!!

EDIT! Since the results were first posted, they have been changed! My watch told me I ran a 6:31, and in fact I did. I place fourth in my age group. One second off my PR!
