Flying Pig Expo and Little Kings Mile Recap

It was finally here! Time to pack up and head to Cincinnati for Flying Pig weekend! I would be taking on the 3-Way Challenge with Extra Cheese. This breaks down to a mile Friday, 10k/5k Saturday and a half marathon on Sunday. The plan all along was to race the 10k and just have fun the other races.

So Joe and I woke up early and started our road trip to Cincy. We ended up staying in Kentucky and it was perfect! Easy access everywhere and food was stupid close.

We made our way downtown and got right to the expo. Guys, this expo was awesome! It was huge and there was so much stuff! Plus, the pig theme is every where!

We picked up our bibs then continued through the expo.

Not only did I get a shirt for each race, I got a Flying Pig bag, 13.1 magnet and a Flying Pig print. Seriously!

We walked around for about an hour then headed back to the hotel to nap. The race was at 8pm so we had some time.

We ended up getting downtown super early and explored a little. The town was so excited for this race! Everything had pigs and pink it was great!

We grabbed our bibs and headed to the start line. I was in corral B and Joe was in C.

I was instantly regretting saying I would run slower. I heard people in my corral hoping for under 7:45. I decided to move up to the front of my corral. Pretty good decision on my hand.

This race actual had waves. Corral A went off then there was about two minutes between so there was a nice gap. I decided I would aim around seven minutes to see what my legs had in them.

The announcer said go, and go I went! There were no quarter mile markers in the race which was super nice. We had a straight away that led to a right turn. This was about half way. I was pretty comfortably in the front of my pack still which made me excited.

Out of the turn was a left and then straight to the finish. I'm still feeling really good which is completely shocking to me. Zero speed workout has come out of these legs since the fall. This shouldn't be happening. My allergies had been bothering me all day, and they kicked up in the final quarter mile. Lots of spit happened, mostly on myself.

I hit the finish line and my watch said 6:58! Get out of here!?! Official time was 7:01 and I ended up eighth in my age group! Shocked face for sure!

Joe broke eight minutes for the first time!

We got two free beers with our registration and just enjoyed the evening. The place was hopping! It was so much fun!

We had such a great first day of Flying Pig weekend! I was so excited for the next races! Here is the course map and elevation chart from the mile!

  1. That's awesome! Way to go! I'm looking forward to the rest of your recaps.. Thinking of doing my first & only full in 2018.. my body won't be ready for next year, but I'm hoping for 2018 & I want a FLAT course!!

    1. Yay! I'm thinking my next marathon will be in the fall of 2017, but we will see. For sure will not be again this year.

  2. Congrats! THat's an awesome time! I can only hope one day I'm that fast lol. I think my best mile time is somewhere in the 8's.

    1. Thanks Montana! Its actually my slowest mile road race I've done, but this course was a lot different than the ones I have done before. I also didn't have three races the next two days either.
