Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas 5k Recap

Part One: Out and About In Las Vegas and Expo

After a few days of exploring, it was time to get ready for a race! The 5k was on Saturday but before the race hubs and I had a meeting to go to for some fun on Sunday. Luckily Susan and her husband Kevin would be joining us. So many laughs! We had such a great time. I'm so excited they are coming to Pittsburgh in May!

After a quick stop we headed over to the fairgrounds area where the race would be. We got there a little early so we had to wait outside. Our meetup was about an hour before the race but we knew tons of people would be filing in. Brandi showed up with the donuts right before the gates opened. Now it was a party.

Once inside the fairgrounds we set up shop for the meetup. I don't think words can do it justice. I'm just going to let the pictures do the talking.

After close to an hour of smiles, donuts, hugs and selfies it was time to get ready for the race. I of course forgot to put in a finish time, so I got my corral changed to 2. I lined up at the front of corral 2 and Dorothy was right in front of me in the back on corral 1. We chatted for a little bit before they were off.

Once they were gone we moved up. We got to the start line and all of a sudden there was a person walking towards me on my right. I looked and it was FREAKING MEB! He said something and then high fived me! All I could say was "YOU'RE MEB!?" and high fived him back. This was nuts!

Thanks to LB, Mandy and my mom for the same picture!

I wanted to use this as my tempo run for the week. The plan was to start around 8:00 then drop to 7:45 and end with 7:30. Seemed like a great plan. I was not going to be distracted by Meb.

First mile I passed the people who should not have been in corral 1 with ease. We ran back by the starting corrals and it was so cool to get the energy from everyone waiting to start. They were cheering for us and just having fun. This is exactly what this weekend is about.

Mile 1: 8:02

Alright! I'm on pace for once! Time to pick it up, or I thought. We left the fairgrounds to go out on the road for a little bit. All of a sudden I am packed in. It's like everything narrowed. I couldn't have tempo-ed this mile if I tried. I found a nice groove and stayed for this section. Right before the turn around I saw Carlee and Dave and screamed for them. It looked a little more open after the turn around, and it was. I could move a little bit.

Mile 2: 8:24

I started seeing more people on my way back. I was cheering them all on but I wanted to get my legs moving. We were heading back towards the fairgrounds but I have no concept of how far away the finish line actually is. I may have kicked a little early but it was fine. I saw hubs cheering in the actual finish shoot. I yelled to him that I started with Meb and high fived him. Little did I know about five feet in front of me was Meb again! I made it a point to high five him again!

Mile 3: 8:15           Finish time: 25:59

Was it the time I wanted? Nope. Was I racing? Nope. I'm proud of myself for not going out too fast in the first mile and bringing it back in the final mile. Oh, and Meb. That was cool too.

This race was so much fun. I smiled the whole time. The atmosphere was great, the company was even better. Also, can we talk about this medal?! I'm obsessed! It might be one of my favorites. It was really the perfect way to kick off the weekend. Next up, half marathon number 20!

Below is the course map and elevation chart.
