Princess Half Marathon Training - Week Nine

It's peak week!!! Would it be weird for me to say I never thought it would get here? This week means so much more than the most mileage in my training plan, it means it's almost time for the race!!


Monday was the last day of my sinus problem. I left work early and took a three hour nap. When I woke up I felt human again! I did a strength training workout and rolled a little bit. It felt so good to breathe!

I moved around some of my workouts so I could stay inside and take it easy on Tuesday. I ran six super easy miles on the treadmill with no problems. I did another strength training workout. I finished January with 134.7 miles and really took a moment to let that sink in. This time last year I was battling my second stress fracture in two years. This week I was scheduled to run more miles than I completed in all of February 2016. It's incredibly humbling.


Wednesday I took a rest day and headed up to Slippery Rock! Both of my schools were playing in basketball and I took the day to visit some friends. The game was pretty terrible, but I had so much fun. I'm very grateful for these people. I don't get to see them a lot but we always have such a good time.


Thursday was my make it or break it workout. 

2 mile warm up
2 x 3 miles at HMP (8:01, 7:50, 7:59 - 8:03, 8:08, 7:56)
3:00 recovery
1 mile cool down
9.2 miles total.


This was hard. Harder than it should have been this far in to training. Sustaining an 8:00 pace for 13.1 miles might not happen, but since it was my far reach goal for this race I'm okay with it. I'm sure I will still try on race day, but the goal is to break 1:50, this was a five minute buffer. I'll still train at this pace for sure.

Friday I rested, well because my body made me. My head was pounding and it was very much from a lack of sleep. I slept 11 hours Friday night and it was everything I needed.

Saturday I modified my workout since I had my longest run of the training on Sunday. I took to the treadmill and ran a five mile progression (8:56, 8:55, 8:40, 8:32, 8:22). My legs felt so good. That sleep was really needed.


Sunday was the day. I headed out and ran 15 miles. 15 miles people. This is my longest run in over a year. The first 11ish miles were great. I ran two 45 minute five mile loops. Then the wind picked up. Oh man did the wind pick up. I felt like I got punched in the gut. By the final mile I was so defeated. I found Kelsey and we ran the last half mile together. I finished under 2:20 - with a 1:58 half marathon. I saw so many people out. It was so nice to see familiar faces when I was dying.


Weekly Total: 35.2 Miles
February Total: 29.2 Miles
2017 Total: 164 Miles

I can't believe I made it to the taper!! The only thing I will really be tapering on is my long runs. I still have speed work and longer mid week runs. I also have a massage coming up and just getting excited for vacation!!!

  2. Seriously was such a brutal week weather-wise. HOLY EVERYTHING your January miles! I'm also coming off injury, so encouraging to see that with rest and smart training you can get back to those kinds of miles. It IS humbling, you hit the nail on the head! (Or we're just getting old...ugh). xo!

  4. Congrats on 15 miles!!! I'm in the same boat. I haven't ran more than 14 since Pittsburgh last year. Can't wait to ramp up my mileage this year!
