Pittsburgh Marathon Training - Week Four



There is a word to describe this week, frustrating. I am so grateful this was my only cutback week of training.


With Just A Short Run taking place on a Saturday, I could run on Monday. I had my first speed workout of this training, but couldn't find an empty track. I improvised with finding the flattest surface I could find. Here is what my workout was:
1 mile warm up
400x8 (1:46, 1:50, 1:51, 1:47, 1:50, 1:43, 1:37, 1:46)
1 mile cool down
5 miles total.


Tuesday I had given up on my eye pain and scheduled a doctors appointment for Wednesday. Plus, my Goodr sunglasses came in which have proved super helpful.


So Wednesday was doctor day. This is what my eye looked like going in to the appointment. 


Well, it turns out I have a thing.


I am on a double round of steroids for a month (pills and eye drops) and still in a ton of pain. The pain is pretty rough in the morning when I first wake up. I still can't look to the right or down without pain, so I have tried my best to avoid it. I am happy there is an answer, and I see the doctor again in two weeks. Hopefully there is some progress, but as of me writing this, there isn't and it sucks.

Thursday I was so grateful Kelsey let me crash her run. She has been dealing with some foot pain so together we were miserably gimpy. We ran four miles together and I am happy I could get out for a little bit.


Friday I was suppose to run but I didn't. The weather was crappy. I felt crappy and just didn't want to do it. I wish I could correctly describe to you all what this feels like, but I can't.

The best thing that happened on Friday was the release of the Pittsburgh Marathon PRO Compression sock!! I believe the XS size will be restocked on Tuesday, but do not wait to order. These will go fast!


Saturday I didn't run but I had to work so I knew that was going to happen. Plus, it was cold and damp, yuck.

Sunday was going to be my day. It was beautiful outside and I could take my time with my long run. Remember that word of the week, frustrating. I ran a mile and stopped. My body hurt. Real bad. I mean, what should I have expected? I'm taking four steroid pills and eight steroid eye drops a day. My body is a wreck. All I wanted was this time for myself so I could listen to my podcasts and enjoy the weather. Nope. Let's take this away too. It just wasn't good.


Weekly Total: 10 miles
March Total: 97 miles
2017 Total: 344 miles

So, that's how it went. I promised to be completely honest with you guys through everything, and here it is. You will have good weeks and there will be really bad ones. It is all about how you adapt to it. I am super lucky this was a cutback week and hopefully the extra rest will help later down the road. It's just kinda hard to see it right now, no pun intended.

  2. I was so sorry to hear all about your eye problems this week :( I hope that the steroids are giving you some kind of relief and that you will be feeling much better during your follow up visit.
