2017 Pittsburgh Marathon 5k Recap

I have been looking forward to the Pittsburgh Marathon 5k for a really long time. It is such a fun race and one of my favorite courses. This is also the five year anniversary of my first "adult" 5k at this very same race. I was really excited for a fun morning with friends.

Flat Steff was ready!

So race morning it was a little wet and cold, which NEVER happens Pittsburgh Marathon weekend. I was so happy to see so many people brave the elements and still come out. Plus, we had an AWESOME turn out at the We Run Social meet up! Thanks everyone for coming!

Such a fun crew!

Nathan and I had decided to run this race together. He was cold (he lives in Florida) and I was running a marathon the next day. We just wanted to finish in under 30 minutes. Sounds easy enough!

Start line

Lots of people

Friends wear sunglasses with you in the rain because you have a stupid eye.

The gun went off and we moved slowly to the start line. Nathan got stuck in a log jam, which was fine, but we quickly realized we were moving really slow. Nathan also had to pee. Okay, new plan. Find a potty for Nathan.

We made it to the North Side and I saw a dog in a rain coat and lost my mind! I should have warned Nathan before we started, oh well!

Mile 1: 9:04

Shortly after the one mile mark we found a potty for Nathan. He told me he would catch up. I started taking some pictures. The course was a little crowded this year because of construction, but it was still really nice.

I caught up to the 9:00 pacers and I'm sorry, they were really loud and annoying. I had to get past them. It was right after the half way point I made the move. Nathan still hasn't caught up to me, but I'm not concerned. Right at the two mile mark he showed up and said I was trucking. Really?

Mile 2: 8:17

Oops. My bad.

Mile three is the only bridge on the course. I noticed no one was running on the left side of the bridge so we collectively decided we would lead the parade. Thankfully we did because hubs was sitting there taking pictures! It was really fun to see him even in the awful weather.

When we got off the bridge and made it downtown the wind was CRAZY! It was nice to know since I would be running the same final stretch the next day. We are just chatting, not thinking we are pushing the pace at all. It was a lot of fun.

Since I didn't run Pittsburgh in 2016 I was unaware of the new finish line. Guys, it was magical. Taking out the final hill was great and I was shocked when we were already there!

Mile 3: 8:16

Just like the last time we ran this race, Nathan and I finished together. We ran a 26:52 and felt really good.

We met back up with our friends and everyone seemed to have a really great time.

Despite the weather, this was still a really great race. I mean it when I say it is in my top three Pittsburgh races. It is a lot of fun, a great course and a fantastic atmosphere. It is a great way to kick off the festivities of the weekend.

Below is the course map and elevation chart for the race.

  3. Congrats on the race! I ran the Pittsburgh half a few years ago and loved it, need to come back one day. We used to live much closer and I grew up about an hour from Pittsburgh. It was hot and then poured rain the year I ran!
