Out and About Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend

Race weekends can be super hectic. You might feel like you are forgetting something. Never fear friends, I have the important things you NEED to be at this weekend, and some things you can add to your list.

Friday May 5:

The GNC Live Well Health and Fitness Expo - David L. Lawrence Convention Center. 11am-8pm
- The expo is open to the public and if you are a VIP participant you can get in one hour early. This is where you pick up your race bib and shirt. There is also A LOT of vendors so make sure you get there early. If you see something you want, buy it. It might not be there when you go back.

#RunningShoeDay
- Pittsburgh's Mayor Peduto named May 5 as Running Shoe Day to celebrate the over 300,000 miles that will be completed by the participants of all of the marathon weekend races. Play along by using #RunningShoeDay and connect with some other Runners Of Steel.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs Milwaukee Brewers - PNC Park. 7:05pm
- If you are in town and the weather is nice, why not check out a Bucco's game! PNC Park is such a fun place and you can be sitting down relaxing taking in a good game. You can walk there from the expo!

Saturday May 6:

We Run Social Meet Up - Home Plate Entrance PNC Park. 7:30am
- I hosted a Pittsburgh Marathon weekend meet up a few years ago before the 5k and it was so much fun. It was so nice to connect with so many people that I have met on the internet. Now, along with Brandi and Elle, we are making it big! Tell your friends, let's take some selfies and kick off the weekend right!

The UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine 5k - Pittsburgh's North Shore. 8am
- The kick off to marathon weekend is one of the best races in town! If you are planning on going to the expo on Saturday, come down early and cheer on the runners! It is such a fun race (here is my 2015 recap) and is really the best way to kick off race weekend.

Sheetz Toddler Trot - Point State Park. 8:30am
- The next generation of Runners of Steel are taking to The Point! After you finish the 5k the finisher chute will spit you out at Point State Park. Head over and check these toddlers out.

The GNC Live Well Health and Fitness Expo - David L. Lawrence Convention Center. 9am-6pm
- I usually end up back at the expo on Saturday to make sure I didn't miss anything. Like I said, it's a really big expo!

Toyota Kids Marathon - Pittsburgh's North Shore. 9:30am
- These Kids of Steel have been training hard! Make sure you stop by and cheer them on on their one mile journey to downtown! I love watching how much fun not only the kids have but the adult volunteers.

The Rachael Ray Nutrition Pet Walk - Point State Park. 12:00pm
- Come on, who doesn't love to see dogs! Grab your favorite running buddy and let them have their time. They deserve it too!

Pittsburgh Pirates vs Milwaukee Brewers - PNC Park. 7:05pm
- Duh, weekend series!

Sunday May 7:

Dick's Sporting Goods Marathon/UPMC Health Plan Half Marathon/FedEx Ground Marathon Relay - Liberty Avenue between Smithfield Street and 10th Ave. 7am.
- From experience, get to the starting corrals early. Make sure you have tons of time to drop a bag, use the potty and get in your corral. If you are meeting friends make sure you have a clear spot to meet. It gets crazy down there. Most importantly, have fun! This is your victory lap! If you are running the half marathon or relay stay around and cheer on the marathoners. Be an awesome member of the running community.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs Milwaukee Brewers - PNC Park. 1:35pm
- The tradition continues. So many runners will fill PNC Park for an afternoon of fun and celebration. Wear your medal. Show it off!

I hope this breakdown helped have all of race weekend in one place. I can't wait to meet and see so many of you this weekend. You can always connect with me on twitter and instagram as well. Good luck to all of the Runners of Steel!!

  1. Great post, Steff! FYI: The Pens only do the big screen for home games, and I don't believe Saturday is a home game. Can't wait to see you Saturday!

    1. Thanks Ciara! I thought the Internet told me they were doing it but I totally could have read it wrong. It's gonna rain so it doesn't even matter lol.
