Five Things Friday - 6.2

I'm back in my normal routine! Four blog posts this week and my running is becoming consistent! I look forward to this, it's about getting back to normal. Plus, IT'S JUNE! June is my birthday month! It is also my wedding anniversary month and I'M GOING TO DISNEY WORLD! It's going to be a fun month!

With June also comes summer. I love summer, it is my favorite season to train in. I know for a lot of people, summer training is really tough. This week I am linking up with Running on Happy and Fairytails and Fitness for Friday Five talking about summer training adaption. Here are some of my tip for having a successful summer training cycle.


1. Slow Your Role - You need to slow down your pace in the summer. There is no way around it. I will often do interval training to force myself to slow down. There is nothing wrong with it. I promise. Just find your correct training interval and you are good to go!

2. Drink All The Water - While this is a given during warmer months, make sure you are carrying water with you on your runs. If you run somewhere that has water fountains, make sure you are stopping. You lose so much while running in the summer, you have to make sure you are putting it back in.

3. Salt Please - With sweat comes salt. You lose a lot of salt in warm weather. Grab some salt tabs and keep them with you. I use them on long runs every six miles. If you start cramping, take one. If you just feel a little off, take one. It's really up to you.

4. Beat The Sun - Sometimes you need to make sure you start before the sun comes up. It can be really hard to wake up early, but trust me over sleep once and you will regret it. Make sure you pay attention to the weather. Apply sunscreen early and often and wear light colors.

5. Don't Be A Hero - If it is too warm to run outside, DON'T! There is no shame in taking to the treadmill when the humidity is 100% and the real feel is the surface of the sun. There is no point in getting sick or hurt over it.

  1. It's definitely necessary to adjust your expectations during hot summer runs. I do try to add in more electrolytes and drink even more before and after running and cycling

  2. I love running in the summer since I have more free time to do it but I have a hard time cutting back when it gets too hot because I feel I need to get out there and savor the weather! ..lol

  3. I've never tried salt tabs but I received some in my StrideBox that I will try on some of my longer runs this summer!

  4. I love the summer months. I know I will be slower, but I have more energy in the summer with the sun out so much. I do try to get out before the sun, but if not, I try to find the shadiest route (or side of the street).

  5. I have never used salt tabs, but have been tempted to try them. I never used to be a salty runner, but in recent years, I'm a crusty mess after long runs LOL
